Sunday July 19th 2026 - Buffalo Harbor State Park - Buffalo NY - 2.8 miles, 100 feet elevation gain

I wanted to come up with an 'adventure' for the day.  Not just a hike or just a city walk but something of a combination.  I started out by looking for Buffalo urban walks online and found this trail along the harbor.  At least part of it is called the Fuhrmann trail. We got an early start on the day and had breakfast at Panera along the way.  This trail runs along the harbor and our walk started with a very strange horseshoe shaped jaunt around a strange dead end along the Union Ship Canal, a very historic but short canal that connected the harbor of Buffalo with a series of industrial works, most notably the Lackawanna steel company.  I don't think I've ever seen a canal come to an abrupt dead end like this before.  It seems like it was probably used to park ships for unloading.  The state has done a lot of work to repair and remediate the canal to make it suitable for various forms of aquatic plant and animal life.  At the very end of the canal slip is an actual bucket or ladle that came from the steel mill.



After walking around 3 sides of the stub of the canal slip we followed the trail along the more open harbor shore for another mile or so.  The weather was gorgeous with a breeze but pretty intense sun.  Since our adventure day had a 2nd part that would involve more outdoor walking we wrapped up this part of our day by turning around near a park along the shore.

Today was an exciting and scenery filled day.  I woke up to thankfully only a few more inches of snow more than were there when I got to the hotel in Idaho Falls.  The roads in town were awful just like they were when I arrived the night before so I was concerned that the entire day could be difficult.  Amazingly, the highways improved dramatically, seemingly at the city limits.  I had hoped to go through Cody Wyoming today to visit the museum my friend from Oregon recommended but ID-31 had a chain control in effect so I stayed on US-26 which took me further south and added miles both.  I did get to go over top of 9500 foot tall Togwotee pass and I had a good walk along the river in Dubois WY.  The photos do a pretty good job of showing the types of scenery I experienced today.  Other than than snowmobile recreation users at very high altitudes there were virtually no other cars.  I mean many minutes between even seeing one oncoming vehicle and vi...

March 14 - 17, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, OK

By Brian Gilbar (some additions by Chris) Saturday we headed to Tulsa, OK.  It was a long drive in from the panhandle but we each drove half and the day went by quickly.  We stopped for lunch at Pub on the Bricks in Guymon, OK.  The food was good and it seemed like a nice, friendly town.  Once in Tulsa we decided to head right out to dinner to an Italian restaurant Chris had eaten at before, Dalesandros.  The food was amazing, but the portions were way too big.  We could have easily shared.  Chris has chicken cacciatore and I had a carbonara with two kinds of bacon...so delicious!  We then went out for a couple drinks at the Tulsa Eagle.  Not many people there but we had a lot of fun and it was relaxing. Sunday June 28 - Conservation trail at Hunters Creek Park - Near Aurora/Buffalo NY - 5 miles about 450 feet elevation gain

This hike had such glowing reviews on Alltrails and some of them mentioned that it wasn't very wet or muddy and it was very well marked and beautiful. After a nice long dry spell we had a wet few days and going someplace minimally muddy was appealing.  I think the Alltrails comments were well founded.  There were a lot of slightly muddy spots but that is as much because this section of the conservation trail is very popular with mountain bikes as anything.  The trail started out with a good little climb along a gorge over a creek (Hunters creek I guess).  While I was glad to be out on the trail, it was pretty warm and humid and part of me wasn't really into hiking.  I kind of power walked up the hill leaving Brian a bit behind.
