Wednesday June 3rd 2026 - Hubbard Hill Loop - Pisgah State Park (near Keene NH) - 5.8 miles, 790 feet elevation gain

This hike was great.  It started at a big turn around at the end of a dirt road.  There was one van there when we arrived but it was gone when we got back and we didn't see a single person on the trail.  Anytime there is more than 100 feet of elevation gain per mile we consider it a relatively stiff hike.  While the warm weather weather and the climbing did combine to make for a good exercise hike, the trail was very well graded and most of the time the climbs were gradual and mild

There wasn't too much of note on the loop but there was a very large pond with a rocky island in the middle and one section had some giant rocks in a rock garden type setting.  The weather was also good with a fairly consistent breeze to keep the sweat and humidity under control.

Our dinner at Legal Sea Foods went very well. Everybody enjoyed the food and especially the deserts.  We played Yahtzee and had over-priced beers from a fun self-service beer tap thing in the hotel lobby.  Brian took DayQuil and was finally able to sleep well. We got up nice and early and had breakfast in the insanely busy hotel lobby.  There really wasn't much else to do this morning so we were in our rental car before 9 am and headed out of town.  We were able to (with effort and Brian talking to a manager) get a late checkout for my parent's room.  This somewhat cut down their long wait at Logan airport.  They took a taxi to the airport and hopefully are enjoying their flights as much as is possible. Sunday December 27th - Day 7 of fly and drive trip to Oregon - Idaho Falls Idaho to Thermopolis WY

Today was an exciting and scenery filled day.  I woke up to thankfully only a few more inches of snow more than were there when I got to the hotel in Idaho Falls.  The roads in town were awful just like they were when I arrived the night before so I was concerned that the entire day could be difficult.  Amazingly, the highways improved dramatically, seemingly at the city limits.  I had hoped to go through Cody Wyoming today to visit the museum my friend from Oregon recommended but ID-31 had a chain control in effect so I stayed on US-26 which took me further south and added miles both.  I did get to go over top of 9500 foot tall Togwotee pass and I had a good walk along the river in Dubois WY.  The photos do a pretty good job of showing the types of scenery I experienced today.  Other than than snowmobile recreation users at very high altitudes there were virtually no other cars.  I mean many minutes between even seeing one oncoming vehicle and vi...

Tuesday November 21st 2023 - Thanksgiving road trip to Oregon - Days 4 - 7 - Family time in Eugene and road trip start from Eugene to Cheyenne WY

Finding time that aligns with available cell phone or wi-fi coverage has been tough this past 4 days.  My time in Eugene went by very quickly.  I helped my family with a few minor computer tasks on Saturday mostly.  We had some good meals and my step-mother participated in a swap meet type sale that my Dad and I helped deliver and remove merchandise from at the start and end of the day on Sunday.  The trip to move the furniture started VERY early Monday morning. We left before 6 am and headed briefly south on I-5 then east on OR-58 to US-97, North on US-97 briefly then south on OR-31 to Lakeview.  From there we took OR and eventually NV-140 down to Winnemucca.  After lunch and a brief casino visit, we drove east on a nearly empty I-80 to Elko where we had another casino visit and dinner.  The end point for our day was a topic of much discussion and ultimately, we stayed in Wendover Utah which is an interesting contrast with West Wendover Nevada which i...
