Saturday November 1st, 2025 - Pratt's Falls County Park - Manlius (near Syracuse) NY - 5.3 miles about 580 feet elevation gain

We previously visited this very beautiful county park last year.  Fall color is still pretty strong here right now but the leaves are dropping fast.  We finally had 2 days with substantial rain Thursday and Friday so everything was wet but that also meant the creeks and falls had a useful amount of water in them now.

We actually did 2 separate trails here, the North Rim Trail and the West Branch trail.  The North Rim was very hard to navigate because this park insists on using little colored trail blazes at junctions.  Unlike East Coast standard blazes which tell you (from the color) which trail you are following and (from the arrangement of the 3 blazes in the color you are looking for) which direction to turn and where the trail ends, these little markers just vaguely reassured you that you were on the right trail but not very directly which was to turn.  Many times we walked up to the marker from the back side (just seeing a stick in the ground) and had to infer, by looking at which way you would see the trail marker head-on, which direction was meant.  We ended up doing 2 extra little segments of trail and 2 short repeated segments because of this lack of clarity.

  







 
 
 
Our timing was good since it did rain on the way there and as we left but we had very little precip while we were on the trails.  It was a nice start to our Saturday.

Our dinner at Legal Sea Foods went very well. Everybody enjoyed the food and especially the deserts.  We played Yahtzee and had over-priced beers from a fun self-service beer tap thing in the hotel lobby.  Brian took DayQuil and was finally able to sleep well. We got up nice and early and had breakfast in the insanely busy hotel lobby.  There really wasn't much else to do this morning so we were in our rental car before 9 am and headed out of town.  We were able to (with effort and Brian talking to a manager) get a late checkout for my parent's room.  This somewhat cut down their long wait at Logan airport.  They took a taxi to the airport and hopefully are enjoying their flights as much as is possible. Our drive home went very well.  The Mass Pike was busy but there weren't a lot of annoying people and the rental Honda Accord is a good road trip car except for the loud road noise.  We bought the last few cat supplies when we got home and are no...

Wednesday May 7th 2025 - Work trip to DC and fun trip to Toronto - Day 2, DC conference - urban walks

I was ready to go in the morning, recharged after a fun but long day Tuesday.  We went to the same bagel shop as the day before and my manager tried the New Jersey staple of the Pork Roll sandwich and I had the same for the 2nd day in a row.  It’s rare to fine pork roll at all outside the NYC metro area and even rarer to find some place that gets all the details right with salt, pepper and ketchup.  Pearl’s is a very cute bagel place and they even have nice outdoor seating like a little bistro or something.  Very unusual for a small shop. Sunday December 17th 2023 - Hike at Gosnell Big Woods Preserve near Webster, NY - 5.9 miles, 360 feet elevation gain

This was an unusual hike in that it was suburban and close to home but over 5 miles long.  We’d never been to and I had never even heard of Gosnell Big Woods Preserve but it came up on AllTrails and seemed like a good way to get a satisfying hike without a long drive.  We’re traveling to Vermont next weekend so extra driving didn’t seem like a great idea especially since it was supposed to rain later in the day.  On the way we tried eating at Original Steve’s Diner in Penfield.  They are opening a Steve’s in Victor and I was curious to see what we can look forward to. This hike had a variety of terrains from nearly flat creekside trail to woodsy and undulating with some intriguing hills with dips and little valleys.
