Saturday October 28th 2023 - Four Mile Creek and Harris Whalen Parks - near Webster NY - 1.7 miles, minimal elevation gain

The other day we were running errands around town and I remembered that there were two little trailheads along Fairport Nine Mile Road that we might not have explored before.  After Brian got out of work at Target we headed out to explore these 2 small nearly unmarked trailheads.  Four Mile Creek is almost in Webster, about 24 miles North of our house.  I was surprised to see that Alltrails had good maps of the little trail network at this park but nobody has uploaded any suggested hikes there.  When we actually did the 3 loops we kind of realized why nobody wrote them up.  All 3 loops totaled just barely 3/4 of a mile.  It was very nice scenery, entirely covered in bright colored crunchy leaves but it felt like Barbie's hiking trails they were so tiny.

Harris Whalen Park was a few miles closer to home and, based on the trail conditions, is used quite a bit more than Four Mile Creek.  There were a lot of blazed trails going all around this small park and it had more texture than the other hike.  Still, even clinging to the perimeter trails, this park's trail network was barely any longer than the other one.

As an after work mini adventure it was very successful and fun.  As hikes they weren't amazing.

Our dinner at Legal Sea Foods went very well. Everybody enjoyed the food and especially the deserts.  We played Yahtzee and had over-priced beers from a fun self-service beer tap thing in the hotel lobby.  Brian took DayQuil and was finally able to sleep well. We got up nice and early and had breakfast in the insanely busy hotel lobby.  There really wasn't much else to do this morning so we were in our rental car before 9 am and headed out of town.  We were able to (with effort and Brian talking to a manager) get a late checkout for my parent's room.  This somewhat cut down their long wait at Logan airport.  They took a taxi to the airport and hopefully are enjoying their flights as much as is possible. Tuesday November 21st 2023 - Thanksgiving road trip to Oregon - Days 4 - 7 - Family time in Eugene and road trip start from Eugene to Cheyenne WY

Finding time that aligns with available cell phone or wi-fi coverage has been tough this past 4 days.  My time in Eugene went by very quickly.  I helped my family with a few minor computer tasks on Saturday mostly.  We had some good meals and my step-mother participated in a swap meet type sale that my Dad and I helped deliver and remove merchandise from at the start and end of the day on Sunday.  The trip to move the furniture started VERY early Monday morning. We left before 6 am and headed briefly south on I-5 then east on OR-58 to US-97, North on US-97 briefly then south on OR-31 to Lakeview.  From there we took OR and eventually NV-140 down to Winnemucca.  After lunch and a brief casino visit, we drove east on a nearly empty I-80 to Elko where we had another casino visit and dinner.  The end point for our day was a topic of much discussion and ultimately, we stayed in Wendover Utah which is an interesting contrast with West Wendover Nevada which i...

Wednesday May 7th 2025 - Work trip to DC and fun trip to Toronto - Day 2, DC conference - urban walks

I was ready to go in the morning, recharged after a fun but long day Tuesday.  We went to the same bagel shop as the day before and my manager tried the New Jersey staple of the Pork Roll sandwich and I had the same for the 2nd day in a row.  It’s rare to fine pork roll at all outside the NYC metro area and even rarer to find some place that gets all the details right with salt, pepper and ketchup.  Pearl’s is a very cute bagel place and they even have nice outdoor seating like a little bistro or something.  Very unusual for a small shop. As soon as we went up the escalator into the main hall, it was apparent that this was not as modest a gathering as I might have imagined.  There seemed to be a ton of people milling around.  We attended one early break-out session before the keynote session started.  The keynote probably serves mentally, though not officially, as the start of the conference.  That first break-out was ok but I didn’t really get m...
