Spring Road Trip Day 3 - Sunday March 12th - Holliday Lake State Park Lakeshore Trail - 7.2 miles, about 500 feet of elevation
I made a whole list of saved trails on AllTrails for this road trip. When I first looked at the list of the hikes we could do today I thought we’d go to Pocahontas state park for a 5.5 mile walk. Then I looked more at my list and the photos associated with each hike and realized that Holliday Lake was both a more interesting hike and a lot closer to our destination for tonight, Lynchburg.
A light snow started falling on our way to the hike and it snowed almost the entire time we were hiking. The facilities at the park are lovely. A very clean heated bathroom and shower building, good signage, a well maintained trail and multiple bridges on the trail. We saw absolutely zero people walking anywhere on our walk which wasn’t a surprise for a snowy day in March. We had a goal of doing 12 ‘wintery’ hikes this year. We’ve done over 12 hikes this winter but a few of them we deemed ‘not wintery’. We certainly didn’t expect to be able to nail another wintery one in Southern Virginia in March.
The trail is easy to explain. It encircles the entirety of the lake at the center of the state park and goes a ways up the creek that flows in one end of the lake. Surprisingly for a lakeshore hike there were several times the trail went ‘inland’ far enough that the lake wasn’t visible at all. It also had some pretty good little ups and downs.
This was a wonderful hike in every way. The snow wasn’t annoying, it added ambiance. There were many different species of birds we could see and hear along the trail. There was no automobile or boat or any other form of noise pollution and the entire park from bathroom to picnic area to boat ramp was completely litter free.
The hotel in Lynchburg is very nice and at least tonight, super desolate with almost no guests. We had a simple dinner at Olive Garden and now we’re doing laundry before going back to the hotel.
