Saturday October 14th 2023 - Spruce Pond loop - Morgan Hill State Forest - near Fabius NY - 4.5 miles, about 600 foot elevation change

On the way to the hike Fred and stopped by a cafe in Auburn called Cafe 108.  They have a great menu of breakfast items and they specialize in having things for all dietary needs from omnivore to vegan and gluten free.  It's always nice to find places that go beyond the basics in a small town.

The experience of finding this hike was funny.  I did this hike 3 years ago but was very certain at the time that we were hiking in the Labrador Hollow Unique area.  It turns out this hike is actually NOT in the unique area at all though there is a connecting trail that goes to it.  I appreciate my friend Fred being patient with getting to the right trail head since we first arrived at Labrador Hollow and I was very surprised that the pond that is the center of the unique area wasn't the hike I was trying to go on.

I only took a single and not special photo but the hike was very enjoyable.  We also lucked out because we had cool but dry conditions for the entire hike.  It was rainy at home (sometimes really rainy) and it started sprinkling on us just a few miles from this hike.  So basically we managed to find a spot and a time that was dry on a day where dry was hard to find.


On some future visit to this area I'd like to try some of the other trails at Morgan Hill State Forest including the portion of the North Country Scenic Trail that connects over to the unique area.

I was ready to go in the morning, recharged after a fun but long day Tuesday.  We went to the same bagel shop as the day before and my manager tried the New Jersey staple of the Pork Roll sandwich and I had the same for the 2nd day in a row.  It’s rare to fine pork roll at all outside the NYC metro area and even rarer to find some place that gets all the details right with salt, pepper and ketchup.  Pearl’s is a very cute bagel place and they even have nice outdoor seating like a little bistro or something.  Very unusual for a small shop. Sunday November 6th, 2022 - Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill - near Naples NY - about 3.5 miles estimated 600 feet elevation gain

Originally I had a hike picked out near Ithaca that would be a 7 mile loop.  When we got in the car, Google maps didn't seem to be going on the route I asked for but after a few rounds of fighting with it it was at least avoiding I-90 which was my main goal and we ended up going south along NY-64 which is very scenic and nice even though it wasn't the route I intended. That route took us right through Naples and as we approached Naples I asked if we really wanted to go on such a long drive and when Brian didn't care I decided to save a lot of road time and revisit Ontario County Park which is just 30 minutes from home. We hadn't been there in over a year and it is a showpiece park for the area because it's set on a very steep hill and has a lot of different trails. March 29 - April 1, Memphis and Camping near Nashville

By Brian Gilbar We both woke up on Sunday a bit congested (I suspect from the casino air) and it's also spring allergy time so we took a bit of time getting up.  We did one load of laundry while getting ready to head out.  We stopped at Zaxby's (chicken place) in Collierville for breakfast/lunch before a hike.  I had never been to one before.  The chicken was delicious but everything was quite salty.  Probably good before a long hike to have extra salt in our bodies! We then headed to do a 7 mile hike at Herb Parsons Lake.  The trail goes around the lake.  It was quite chilly at first, about 49 degrees and quite windy.  We had decided to wear shorts as it was supposed to get up to 68 degrees today.  It did warm up eventually.  The trail was beautiful and we didn't see too many people, although there was a mix of hikers, bikers and runners.  Chris had been on this trail before when he lived in Memphis, probably 7 or 8 years ago, ...
